A posthumous song was released today by revered soul singer Charles Bradley. “Lucifer” was recorded while in the fall of 2016 the legend of the Daptone Records, who passed away from cancer in 2017, underwent chemotherapy. The funky track, complete with groove in the athletic breakbeat style, addresses President Obama in office at the end of his time. “Obama, you did what you were supposed to do,” sings Bradley in the middle of the song. “Modify the world.”
The recording was made in the same session that produced “Lonely As You Are,” a rough-hewn piano ballad with a backbeat gospel, which was previously released. Both songs feature support from The Avett Brothers, among others, from Seth Avett and Mike Marsh. The final album of Bradley, Black Velvet, was released last year in November. Bradley will also appear on the A-side of Daptone’s 100th 45 release, released on June 29 and featuring the late Sharon Jones as well. Hear below “Lucifer.”
