With his first album in five years, the guest-heavy Flamagra, Flying Lotus is back this week. We’ve heard tracks with David Lynch, Little Dragon, and Anderson. Paak, and Stephen Ellison shares one with Denzel Curry that he recorded today. The ascendant Florida rapper contributes bars to “Black Balloons Reprise,” which does not seem to be a bizarre sequel to Goo Goo Dolls ‘ late-90s “Black Balloon” smash for better or worse.
Instead, it is an apocalyptic boom-bap exercise that sends Curry’s aggressive vocals bouncing as high as nuclear missiles. (His hook: “The day the black balloon explodes, we all die!”) FlyLo writes on Twitter, “That black balloon beat is dedicated to @madlib and @nowagain. I heard quas’ come on feet’ when I was in college, it relieved my sampling love and eventually changed my world. Love legends with you.”
