The mind behind skuzzy San Francisco garage-psych greats Sic Alps and the more placid (but still slightly skewed) Peacers offshoot project is Mike Donovan. He follows up on this week’s Drag City solo album How To Get Your Record Played In Shops with a new one called Exurbian Quonset. Billed as a weirdo spin on a cycle of soft-rock songs, Exurbian Quonset is the last release of Donovan as a Bay Area resident before decamping permanently to New York State.
He preceded it with advance tracks “Wadsworth March” and “Digital Dan,” and today, before it drops this Friday, he shares one last single from the album. After the two rock exercises gently mangled, today’s “B.O.C. Rate Applied is the bunch’s softest and prettiest, a jaunty yet spacious offering that hits like a deconstructed” Happy Together. “Appropriately, it gets a video from found Super 8 footage that matches the pastoral psych-pop vibes.
Watch below and stick around if it suits you for the other two singles.
