I’ve enjoyed recent singles from Samia like “Lasting Friend” and “Somewhere” from the Active Bird Community, and her setting at our SXSW Range Life party was pretty nice. (The “My Sharona” cover was also included, but not repeated ad nauseam Deerhunter-style.)
She has a new song called “Ode To Artifice” out today that continues her quality releases streak. This is a jaunty number with overtones of retro soul. It arrives with a video directed by Nick D’agostino, featuring ample hairbrush singing and Mary-Louise Parker’s cameo (who is Samia’s mom, Kathy Najimy’s pals).
With Consequence Of Sound, Samia shared some background:
“Ode To Artifice” is a desperate plea; my authentic self is lusting after my stage/party persona and begging her to merge… Nick D’agostino and I decided to tell the story of a girl who spends weeks obsessing over the way she’ll present herself at prom, only to discover that she is grossly underdressed compared to the more colorful and popular version of herself who is thriving at the event.
