June is on us, bringing a new drop from Wale with it. As if on cue, with a proclamation, he kicks off the brief loosie. “Approaching summer,” he spits. “I’m the superego that humbled these vultures, I’m hungry, I’m focused.” As Thelonius Martin’s smooth, boom-bap instrumental cruises were infused at a comfortable pace, Wale rides the wave ably, possessing his insecurities like an honorary badge. “I’m disturbed, I’m introverted, you know nothing,” he admits. Yet it’s not all bad, as even his shortcomings, at least by his own account, have brought him success with the opposite sex.
As the song progresses, as one of its strongest attributes, Wale’s penchant for flow continues to emerge. His schemes switch to refreshing old-school fashion, as vivid pictures and wordplay work wonders to retain interest. “When I got the guillotine, why worry about who cappin?” he asks, in the midst of chimes and faint guitar. “These n*** use anxiety for an aesthetic.” Check out “Daylight” now if you may have forgotten what Wale can weave up.
