The fourth and final round of Nelly Furtado’s 2006 Loose opener “Afraid” chorus is sung by a band of teenage-sounding voices that end the song by collapsing into laughter. “You’re so scared of what individuals might say, but that’s okay because you’re just human,” they sing. “You’re going to get strong enough quickly.”
Kieran Hebdan (a.k.a. KH, a.k.a. British electronic musician Four Tet) took those 17-second chorus, slightly sped them up, added a U.K. Garage pulse and loop it to fill the gripping bulk of its 7:56-long “Only Human” single. It’s a true dancefloor track driver whose lyrical repetition hammers the easy yet strong message of the original: hang in there. Enjoy below.
