She put the thang down, turned it over and turned it over.
In her futuristic and unconventional artistic form, Missy Elliott had fans at their feet during her performance at the 2019 MTV Video Music Award. She was given the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, but before being honored, multi-hyphenated artists revived some of her best music moments above stage.
The medley included hit songs such as “Get Your Freak On,” “The Rain,” “Hot Boyz,” “Work It,” “Pass That Dutch,” and the distraction club assisted by Ciara, “Lose It.” Missy and a group of very talented dancers moved from scene to familiar scene from her music video and at one point, 26-year-old Alyson Stoner even went to the stage to dance, once again, to Missy. For those who don’t know her name, Alyson is a young girl who gained popularity when she appeared in Missy’s videos for “Work It” and “Gossip Folks” as dancers.
During her speech, Missy dedicated her victory to the “dance community” who always supported her. She made sure to thank Peter Gabriel, Janet Jackson, and her friend, the late singer Aaliyah. “I have worked diligently for more than two decades and I never thought I would stand here accepting this award, so it means a lot to me,” she said.
