Shawn Mendes Responds To Resurfaced Racist Tweets: “That’s Not My Personality”

While Shawn Mendes has been making headlines lately about a North American tour and her new love with Camila Cabello, the Canadian-born singer has just entered some controversy over some old racist tweets. During a recent question and answer, a black fan asked the singer “Senorita” about the last tweet where he used the word N and other offensive words.

“How come it’s never been recognized?” the fan asked the singer. “We got a lot of hatred because we supported you, knowing that this has been, like, your past. And not to say that this is you now, or something like that, it’s just very important for us to know, like, how you are?”

As for Shawn’s response, he blamed friends for stealing his phone and sharing messages to his feed given the high number of followers he had.

“I just think that a lot of things need to be moved. But I also think that things are seen, like I had a friend when I was 14 who would, like, take my phone and, like, post stuff from them. Because they think it’s funny that I have 2,000 followers and that is this big thing, and they will post photos of themselves, “he explained.

“At that time I just, like, didn’t think about it. I didn’t know I would have 50 million followers. That didn’t make it better, but um, yeah, really. I mean, I’m sorry for all the insensitive I said in those days then, but with that being said, yes, I don’t think that’s my personality. “
